Why Moles Are So Active in the Spring in New Jersey — And How Action Termite and Pest Control Can Help

Mole Extermination

As New Jersey’s landscape thaws and blossoms in spring, homeowners often notice fresh mounds of soil, raised tunnels, and damaged lawns — telltale signs of mole activity. While these elusive creatures remain underground most of the time, spring marks a peak in their visibility and damage. At Action Termite and Pest Control, we understand the frustration moles cause and offer expert solutions to help homeowners reclaim their yards.

Why Moles Become a Springtime Problem

Moles are active year-round, but several factors make spring their busiest and most noticeable season:

  1. Soil Conditions Improve: As the ground softens after winter, it becomes easier for moles to dig their tunnels. This increased digging activity often results in more visible damage to lawns and gardens.

  2. Food Sources Multiply: Moles feed primarily on insects like earthworms, grubs, and beetle larvae. Spring rains and warming soil bring these food sources closer to the surface, drawing moles upward and into residential yards.

  3. Breeding Season Begins: Moles typically breed between late winter and early spring. During this time, males become more active and expand their tunnel systems to find mates, which increases their visibility and lawn damage.

  4. Homeowners Return Outdoors: As people begin lawn care and gardening in spring, mole activity becomes more noticeable — especially after the relatively quiet winter months.

How Action Termite and Pest Control Handles Mole Infestations

At Action Termite and Pest Control, we take a targeted and environmentally responsible approach to mole control:

1. Thorough Inspection

We begin by assessing the extent of mole activity, identifying active tunnels, runways, and feeding areas. This helps us determine the best control strategy for each property.

2. Monoxide Sprayer

The exhaust hose for the carbon monoxide sprayer is placed into an open burrow and covered slightly with dirt to create some back pressure. The carbon monoxide sprayer is turned on and allowed to run for a full three minutes per burrow. Holes showing smoke exuding from them are filled with surrounding soil.  At the conclusion of each burrow’s treatment the exhaust hose is removed from the burrow opening and the hole is closed with soil, leaving no moles.

3. Baiting and Repellents

In select cases, we use mole-specific baiting products that mimic their natural food sources. We may also apply professional repellents to help deter moles from re-entering sensitive areas of the yard.

4. Ongoing Monitoring and Prevention

We understand that mole control isn’t always a one-time fix. That’s why we offer ongoing monitoring and maintenance services to keep mole activity in check year-round.
